Synopsis This course provides foundational exposure and practical knowledge regarding workshop tools and machinery operations, including drilling, lathe, milling, and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) systems. It also covers gear inspection/measurement and various welding processes such as Oxy-Acetylene, SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

  • CLO1: Apply knowledge of basic mechanical components, equipment, hand tools, and measuring instruments.

  • CLO2: Apply standard operating practices when using mechanical tools and components.

  • CLO3: Demonstrate continuous learning and information management skills to complete assignments.

Assessment Structure The course uses a split evaluation approach combining Continuous Assessment (50%) and a Final Exam/Assessment (50%):

Syllabus & Schedule (14 Weeks)

  • Weeks 1–2 (Hand Tools): Tool applications and basic measuring techniques (4 hours).

  • Weeks 2–3 (Drilling): Drilling machine operation and safety (4 hours, assessed via Quiz).

  • Weeks 3–5 (Lathe & Milling Machines): Lathe machine components, function, and milling operations (7 hours total, assessed via Test).

  • Weeks 6–7 (Gear Systems): Gear types, functions, and spur gear inspection (6 hours).

  • Weeks 8–9 (Advanced / CNC Systems): Operating principles of CNC Lathe, CNC Milling, EDM, and ECM systems (6 hours, assessed via Assignment).

  • Weeks 10–14 (Welding): Principles and standard procedures for SMAW, Oxy-Acetylene, GMAW, and GTAW, along with weld defect/distortion analysis (15 hours, assessed via Case Study & Presentation).
